Wiltshire is a county full of contrast and history, modernity and mystery…….The difference between the north and south of the county is said to be as marked as chalk and cheese. In fact it is believed that the phrase "chalk and cheese" emanated from Wiltshire. The history of Wiltshire dates all the way back to prehistoric times. Stonehenge is undoubtedly the most important prehistoric monument in the whole of Britain and has attracted many visitors throughout the years. The Stonehenge that we see today was completed about 3500 years ago and stands as a timeless monument to the people who built it. The county of Wiltshire is full of picturesque villages and towns, from the tranquility of Tiddleywink (yes, it does really exist) to the swagger of Swindon which is still expanding and is now one of the fastest-growing commercial areas in the UK and Europe. Swindon has been hailed as the most productive town in the United Kingdom. As well as its history, the county of Wiltshire is also famed for its paranormal activity. From haunted pubs to impressive crop circles Wiltshire has it all!! |
