JOIN THE HALF-TERM FIRST AID FUN DURING NATIONAL FAMILY WEEK 25 to 31 MAY 2009

St John Ambulance is encouraging families to learn first aid during National Family Week by running three hour Family First Aid courses for parents.

Two million children have accidents every year in the UK but shockingly 7 out of 10 adults would not know how to help an unconscious child who has drowned and one in three would be clueless if their toddler was choking. The nation’s leading first aid charity is giving families the chance to equip themselves with crucial life saving skills by running Emergency Life Support (Child and Infant) courses in Devizes, Swindon and Salisbury from 26-28 May.

National Family Week is a brand new initiative designed to celebrate and promote good family life and create a more family-friendly culture in the UK.  The aim is to encourage families everywhere to spend more time together in an environment that is fun, healthy, educational or creative.

Micaela Owen, Training Manager at St John Ambulance Wiltshire said ‘National Family Week is a great opportunity to learn and do new things together as a family – and what better skill to learn than first aid.  Our three hour course in Emergency Life Support is being offered at a very nominal charge of £5 and it will give parents the chance to learn how to handle an unconscious, choking or badly injured child and gain important life saving skills.  It really is a first aid course which no parent can afford to miss.”

‘We also want to tell people about the volunteering opportunities available. You can use your first aid skills to help those in your community or perhaps become a youth leader or fundraise with us. Being a St John volunteer can be a real family activity.  We have numerous family members where parents and children enjoy going along to meetings and public duties together.’
