Many African students have to walk 10 miles, or even further - in searing heat - to get to their nearest secondary school.

jole rider provide quality, refurbished bikes to African secondary schools. The bikes are refurbished with the help of volunteer engineers and jole rider’s partners HM Prison Service .

The bikes are donated to the African secondary schools, as school assets, and allocated by teachers to students with the longest walks to school. When a student finishes his or her education, their bike remains at the school, to be used by another student.

The charity to date has sent over 5000 bikes to Africa, since the first consignment was shipped in March 2006.  The very first bikes delivered to The Gambia were handed over to Jambanjelly School when jole rider led a 7 day African Xperience adventure there with a school party from St Laurence School of Bradford on Avon.

See the BBC TV news report of the trip here.

jole rider’s education programmes now include  Books 4 Africa where books are being collected to help create school libraries for the schools in The Gambia.  jole rider’s partner schools in the UK are already collecting, supported by  Penguin Books, Dorling Kindersley and Thomas Cook.

Starting in the New Year, jole rider will be extending its influence with bikes by teaching bike maintenance skills to young teenagers in Wiltshire.  The project called “Young People – Fresh Choices” is being funded by the Criminal Justice Board as part of a strategy to help reduce crime in our county.
