SARSEN TRAIL BREAKS RECORDS

A record-breaking 2,000 people took part in the 12th annual Sarsen Trail walk and Neolithic Marathon from Avebury to Stonehenge on Spring Bank Holiday Sunday (April 30).

Nearly 1,800 walkers and more than 200 runners set out on a cool, but thankfully dry, Spring morning to help raise funds to protect Wiltshire’s wildlife.

Organised by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the dual event has become a major Spring attraction for enthusiasts from all parts of the country as well as from abroad. The marathon was won for the third year in a row by Mr Terry Hazell from Gillingham, Kent in 2 hours, 51 minutes. The first woman past the post was Vicky Skelton from North Devon, whose time was 3 hours 25 minutes.

The Trust would like to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the willing volunteers who helped to make the day a success, as well as the Army personnel, Air Training Corps, Police and emergency services, who contributed towards the event.

If you are interested in joining the walk or run next year (6 May 2001), contact Mr Pat Turner at the Trust’s Devizes HQ (01380 725670). If you are less energetic but would still like to help, why not offer your services as a marshal or helper at one of the various checkpoints on the route – your assistance would be most welcome.
