WILTSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST DIRECTOR FEATURES IN ‘A’ LEVEL TEXTBOOK

Young scientists from all over the UK will be learning about the work of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the Devizes-based nature conservation charity, as part of their ‘A’ level biology course over the coming years.

Students thinking about a career in the environmental sciences are given two examples in the latest edition of a leading biology textbook: Dr Persephone Borrow, a researcher looking for a vaccine against AIDS, and the Director of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Dr Gary Mantle MBE.
Advanced Biology: Principles and Applications, by CJ Clegg with DG Mackean, published by John Murray, uses the two scientists to show the variety of careers open to those who study biology.

Already established as the leading textbook for ‘A’ level biologists throughout the UK, Advanced Biology provides a detailed account of the Trust’s nature conservation activities and sets out the Trust’s vision of a sustainable Wiltshire.

A close involvement with the education system is nothing new for the Trust, which has a highly developed programme of work with schools in the county. This includes giving advice on developing school grounds for wildlife, and supplying teaching materials for on topics for the new, “greener” National Curriculum 2000, which incorporates Education for Sustainable Development into classroom practice for the first time.

The Trust also gives support to the environmental scientists of the future by offering year-long work placements to university students, who work as Wildlife Information Officers at the Trust’s headquarters, acting as the first port of call for public wildlife queries.
